Assiniboine Park Conservatory Extension Services

For several years the Conservatory has provided remarkable opportunities for teachers and educators to expand and bring depth to their curriculum. This tradition continues by offering exciting plant themed programs in which youth learn through participating in hands-on activities, visual presentations, and animated tours of the gardens and indoor displays.

In fact, these programs are so well received that APC has branched out into the community by offering educational services at schools, community groups and centres, in which similar programs, referred to as "PlantAid Programs," are conducted by Conservatory staff and volunteers. These services would not exist if it were not for the funds and grants provided by and requested by the Friends, to purchase materials, supplies, and of course the PlantAid vehicle.

Extension services include the PlantAid call-in service that enables callers to forward their plant-related inquiries and it also offers convenience to schools by delivering programs right in the classroom. Moreover, if community centres or groups are looking for basic skill development in any area of horticulture to offer to their neighborhood members, a workshop can be booked with extension services. The Conservatory encourages both community and personal growth because of the physical and emotional benefits resulting from participating in horticultural activities. People eat more balanced meals when they grow their own food, but also become closer to the rhythms of life. Community unity wafts through the neighborhood with the sight of people tending and gathering within a mass of living colour. The possibilities are endless when it comes to gaining the knowledge of gardening, for the Conservatory will come to your neighborhood.

The results of offering such services have been warmly overwhelming. It was discovered that the groups and individuals participating in the programs are the true mentors because they apply their stories, traditional skills and customs, binding the meaning of gardening together and thus, life in general.

The boundaries of gardening are meant to be challenged, the science of plants to be explored, and the cultural uses of plants to be celebrated; the Conservatory provides an avenue in which people are able to do so.

The Wainwright Friendship Award

The Friends of the Assiniboine Park Conservatory have created a new award in honour of Barbara and Jim Wainwright and their volunteer service to the Friends and the Conservatory.  The award will be given annually at the AGM to recognize an exemplary volunteer.

This year's recipient is Joan Walker.  Joan has been volunteering with the Friends of the Conservatory for fifteen years.   She can be found alongside Barbara Wainwright selling plants in the foyer several days per month.   Congratulations Joan and thank you for all that you do to help the Friends.

Jim Wainwright: A Tribute
By Bev Roberts

On Saturday, January 27, a group of staff, management and members gathered at Cropo Funeral Home to celebrate and honour the life of Jim Wainwright. The Friends of the Conservatory as a group of individuals are dedicated to enhancing and supporting the creative horticultural efforts of the Assiniboine Park Conservatory – Barb and Jim Wainwright are without doubt two of the best friends either group could ever have. It was apparent to all those who knew Jim and understood his years of dedicated service to supporting the mission of the Friends that “thank you” was simply too small a word to acknowledge his contributions. The Friends and Management of the Conservatory have decided that a larger more significant form of recognition is required.

This year at the annual AGM, The Wainwright Award of Friendship will be formally launched. It is the objective of this award to acknowledge the contributions of an individual who best exemplifies the tradition and gentle spirit of dedicated volunteer contribution as demonstrated by Jim Wainwright throughout his many years of service. It was once said that “Friendship is not a big thing… but a million little things.”

That could not be more true of Barbara and Jim. Their millions of minutes have amounted to years of service. The millions of pots and plugs and plants that they have sold have contributed significant financial support which has enhanced the millions of eyes who have enjoyed the visual splendor of the Conservatory horticultural displays. The millions of moments they have shared with other Friends and staff made a lifetime of memories. Most importantly, Barbara and Jim's friendship has grown to make us all feel like family. We have all been blessed through their tireless efforts and our lives made richer because we have had the privilege of knowing them both.

On behalf of the Board, the members of the Friends, the staff, management and all those who come each year to visit the Conservatory we would like to thank both Barbara and Jim – for the millions of little things they have done on our behalf – from the bottom of our collective hearts!
